'Where each child’s unique talents are celebrated': Te Rau Horopito school construction on track as enrolments open

The school is being built to serve the rapidly growing Tauwharekākaho | Rolleston community, grounded in strong values, inclusive learning and a deep commitment to an environment where everyone learns and feels a sense of belonging.
The Te Rau Horopito adventure began on March 25 with a Karakia Whakawātea (blessing and sod turning ceremony), marking the start of construction for the new school.
Foundation principal Jo Grant gratefully acknowledged the gifting of the school’s name from local iwi. Te Rau Horopito refers to the Horopito leaf, a symbol of resilience, adaptability, strength, and healing.
Grant outlined the vision for the kura.
"This isn't just about opening a school; it's about creating a place where each child’s unique talents are celebrated, and where their curiosity is ignited.
"We are committed to fostering an inclusive environment that embraces Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the wonderful multicultural diversity of our community."
Grant said their teaching is designed with the child at the centre – building a strong sense of purpose, responsibility, and connection to the world around them.
"We’ll deliver a high-quality curriculum that reflects our community and celebrates every ākonga and their unique identity, culture, and language," Grant explained.
"We want our ākonga to feel proud of who they are, confident in themselves, and excited to learn."

The school is currently under construction, and the first 12-classroom block, an incredible playground and outdoor learning spaces for all ages, will be ready by the opening date.The school is currently under construction, and the first 12-classroom block, an incredible playground and outdoor learning spaces for all ages, will be ready by the opening date.
The administration block will be completed by the middle of March 2026.
Plans are under way for an official opening at the end of March, which the whole community will be invited to.
Further building work will continue at the school next year with another 12 classroom block, a multi-purpose hall and a six-class technology block to be completed by the end of 2026.

Staff have been appointed and are planning and preparing for opening day on February 2, 2026.
This includes supporting tamariki and whānau to transition smoothly into their new school and community events to meet staff and learn more about the school.
